CHARACTER STUFF
Name: Maxxie Oliver
Aliases: Strobe
Canon: Skins
Role: Teen Trash Hero
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Appearance: I don't want you to have to google Mitch Hewer.

Origin story:
Maxxie was born and raised in Bristol as the only child to Walter and Jackie Oliver, a builder and a nanny respectively. Given that most of his friends had truly fucked up childhoods, it seems worth it to mention that Maxxie’s was pretty stable - his parents fought but always made up, and they paid attention to him and gave him as much as they could. When he came out, they were nothing but supportive. When he asserted that he wanted to make a career as a dancer, well, they had a bit more trouble with that, but they knew that of anyone Maxxie was the type to see his dreams through to the end, so they came around.

In his teenage years, Maxxie became a very socially active young man. He and his friends started partying and partying hard, but Maxxie was generally pretty responsible. He kept his grades up, despite wanting to drop out and start dancing full-time, and he usually stuck with alcohol and weed rather than some of the heavier stuff his friends were into. He certainly had his fair share of sex, but it was always safe and always for fun and he still managed to be on time for school (almost) every day, showered and well-dressed.

At some point, things began to get a bit weird. It was just little things at first - he could make brightly coloured lights appear at the ends of his fingertips. It was sort of a fun party trick, but he clued in pretty quickly that he better keep it a secret to everyone but his friends and family. He couldn’t help but practice, though, and after a few broken lamps and a splintered bedframe he started to gain a bit more control. His parents discouraged him from using it, worried that he’d want to start getting involved in the superhero business and put himself in danger.

However, his mind was still on dancing. He wanted to drop out of school before his final year and go to London to audition for musicals, but his parents wouldn’t allow it. After some arguing, they agreed to let him go once he finished his A-Levels. It was a turbulent final year. He kept his grades up, but he was constantly distracted by the buzz of superhero culture. There was no denying that it was an exciting prospect, but he also knew he loved dancing and acting and he was already good at those, so he kept his grand ideas about being a superhero to himself.

When Chris went away to the US, everyone acknowledged the fact that someone probably should take care of him. LA was on his mind constantly - more than a few google searches led him to the Trailblazers. The dance and theatre opportunities in LA weren’t better than London by any means, but he became more convinced that he could make do. He struck a new deal with his parents, and he worked after school with his dad to save up so he could leave for LA as soon as school was over.

When he got there, he got himself registered as soon as possible and joined Chris as a Trailblazers trainee. He and Chris got settled into a shitty two bedroom house and he went to auditions when he wasn’t in training. Currently that’s where he’s at - he’s had a few bit parts in some small musicals but otherwise he is a full-time Trailblazer and socialite.

Personality:
Canon sources generally describe Maxxie as the Gay One, but "still one of the lads." Sadly, they usually forget the fact that he's a huge fucking nerd.

Now, when I say he's a huge fucking nerd, I'm not not just talking about his affection for Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pokemon, etc. I'm also talking about his unapologetic exuberance for life. He throws himself into his dancing and his acting and his superhero-ing with unbridled excitement and he doesn't let anyone take that away from him. His confidence and positivity are what attract people to him, in the romantic and platonic sense. He's not afraid to throw out a cheesy pick-up line, and he totally sells it because he's so genuine with his charm.

The first thing people usually notice about Maxxie is his sunny disposition. He’s always grinning and he always has a quip ready. He’s cheeky and he plays up how cute he is (or how cute he thinks he is) whenever he sees the opportunity. He’s outgoing, but he’s not aggressive about it - he’s sensitive to other people’s feelings and he’ll back down immediately if he realizes he’s not welcome.

However, he can’t be sunny all the time, and he doesn’t hide it well when he’s upset. There isn’t much that causes him distress, but any strife with his friends will send him into turmoil. He bounces back pretty quickly, but that doesn’t mean these feelings are shallow; he just doesn’t dwell on things. Once he feels like an issue is dealt with, he gets right back to enjoying life again. “Dealt with” can mean anything from agreeing to forgive and forget to having an emotional outburst and admitting to his psychology class that he messed around with someone’s boyfriend and he’s sorry for being a slut, getting drunk, and getting them deported from Russia.

(It wasn’t totally his fault that they got deported from Russia, but he played a significant role.)

Anyway, Maxxie’s not the type of guy to mess around with other people’s boyfriends, generally. He’s far too honest for that. Maxxie places a lot of value on honestly, partly because he can’t stand to tell a lie. Everything is out in the open with him, and he hates it when people play games or sweep things under the rug. He’s not always the most reasonable person, but you never have to worry about him hiding his thoughts or his feelings.

The problem is that his feelings dictate just about everything he does, whether it’s for better or worse. He can be really vindictive if he feels wronged, and he can be reckless when he’s upset. He depends a lot on his friends, and he needs social interaction to keep him going - just like every true extrovert - so he puts a lot of effort into keeping those relationships healthy and honest.

Differences from canon:
Maxxie is exactly the same except for the cool powers. He’s a little more confident in conflict situations, since he actually has a pretty good shot in a fight, but otherwise just the same old Maxxie.

He’s still really bad in fist fights, though. Seriously, just fucking useless.

Power level:
C

Powers:
Maxxie’s has the ability to create light, basically. He can do all sorts of things with light, probably up to creating elaborate life-like projections, but given that it takes concentration and energy to maintain something like that he usually goes for things that are a bit flashier. Most of his light actually has a neon glow to it because he just can’t help himself and it looks pretty. It also varies in colour, often to reflect his mood, but sometimes it’s just because he’s feeling artsy.

The best thing he can do is create short bursts of hard light, which he can “throw” at a target, or use as a springboard to jump really high. He can’t create large structures or anything, and it barely lasts a second before it fades, but that’s primarily how he fights. He can probably do a lot more with proper practice, but right now it’s a lot of flash and not a lot of substance.

His light doesn’t give off any heat (or any other type of secondary energy), so it definitely can’t be used to light things on fire. He’s tried.
